TL;DR - THE WORLD MUST DEMAND A CERTAIN TYPE OF STUDENT
I am convinced that education reform is one of the most important tasks moving into the 21st century. It is a widely acknowledged fact that the prevalent school system, which some have claimed mirrors an assembly line model, is outdated and not in line with how we hope the world to be. However, in order to succeed at reforming this model, something crucial needs to be acknowledged. It is not enough to change what we teach and how we teach it. It is critically important to create value systems in the post education world that demand a certain type of person. The fact of the matter is, we can say that we want more empathetic, creative, analytical, and socially adept young people coming out of our education systems, but if we don’t create a demand for such people in the working world then we won’t produce them.
If your most culturally valued skill is the activity of holding and moving money or producing enormous quantities of goods, you will have an education system that generates people that can do that.
The popular assumption is that as we reform our education system we reform our value systems and I think that this is true and evident throughout history. But the point is that the “real world” should be doing all it can to meet education half-way.
